I Opened a Book

I came across this poem by children’s author Julia Donaldson and was struck by how much it was true of me as a child, and still as an adult, and how much we need messages from authors and poets to use to hold the ground that politicians want to lay claim to.

I opened a book and in I strode.
Now nobody can find me.

I’ve left my chair, my house, my road,
My town and my world behind me.
I’m wearing the cloak, I’ve slipped on the ring,
I’ve swallowed the magic potion.
I’ve fought the dragon, dined with a king
And dived in a bottomless ocean.
I opened a book and made some friends.
I shared their tears and laughter
And followed their road with its bumps and bends
To the happily ever after.
I finished my book and out I came.
The cloak can no longer hide me.
My chair and my house are just the same,
But I have a book inside me.

Hello! I have never heard of this author or this poem, however, as soon as I read it, I had to reblog it! This is me to a t! I have so many books inside me, it’s crazy! Reading has always been one of my very favorite pastimes especially lately. Books, books, books….there will never be too many for me!

Have a wonderful day, and give someone you love a big hug! 🙂
