I was delighted to come across this statue in London recently. It is in pride of place near the Tower of London just near the approach to Tower Bridge. It was placed here in 2006 and is the work of Alan Wilson. The builder is an ordinary person in a hard hat with a spirit level. The reason he is here is because of the high number of deaths on building sites in this country.
The builder here represents all builders and is a reminder that our country owes so much to ‘ordinary’ people. The building workers’ union was behind the move to have a statue erected in this place. The plaque has some words which resonate:
“For the thousands of building workers who have lost their lives at work, we commemorate you.
For the thousands of building workers who are today building and rebuilding towns and cities across the United Kingdom, we celebrate you.”
